While I liked the story of three sisters who meet for the first time after their father dies and leaves them all a huge ranch-as long as they all live there for a year together-it was not the best plotted of Ms. Roberts stories and several things kind of drove me nuts from about half-way through till the end. I'm talking about common sense things that everyone else would do, but her characters don't seem to even consider. I'm talking about actions that affect life and death situations! In addition, it felt like another storyline was tacked onto the end of the story--sprung on unsuspecting readers- just to drag it on little longer. That said, the stories lines had a satisfying resolution, the action was good and I liked the characters. But READER BEWARE, this is a different kind of Nora Roberts...very graphic violence. I felt like it was Nora meets CJ Box. I totally expect this stuff in his books-it makes sense for his stories and characters, but it really was too much for her. The same book, with a little less gore and one less story line would be more in line with what you expect. But this mash-up of romance and gory violence didn't quite work.

Montana Sky Nora Roberts 9780425205754 Books Reviews

The death of her father took Willa Mercy by surprise - he hadn't even told her he was sick. Finding out that the cold man who she'd tried her entire life to please had left a will that took away the home she'd grown up in and the ranch she'd worked on for her entire life and split it between herself and two half-sisters she'd never even met, demanding that to get anything, they all had to live together on Mercy ranch for a year, is a betrayal that she can't even process. Then, still reeling from that affront, Willa stumbles across the butchered carcass of one of her cattle. And the only animal who would do something like that...is man. As three strangers struggle with each other and the legacy of the unbending, frigid man who was their father, a psychotic killer stalks Mercy and threatens them all.

It was 1997 when I first read Montana Sky. I'd never read anything quite like it, and it turned me on to the exquisite blend of romance and suspense and mystery that Roberts is so acclaimed at writing. Since then, I've read almost every book Roberts has published, regardless of genre.

Montana Sky is, at its core, a story about the bonds of family - those shared through blood and those born and nurtured through affection, dedication, and love. Three sisters first meet, then spark off each other as they start to know each other, eventually like each other...mostly, then love each other - unquestionably. As those tentative family bonds are laid, so too are the bonds with three impressive men who love them. It's heartwarming and horrifying at turns, and despite its age, has a timelessness that keeps it from feeling dated. It's still one of my favorites of Roberts, despite having a few issues with it as a whole.

It's quite long, first of all, and despite Roberts using that length to develop every aspect of the plot sufficiently, I still felt like there were some parts that could have been trimmed down and streamlined in the plot and in the narrative. A few superfluous scenes bogged down the pacing from time to time. I would have also preferred to have Willa and Ben be the sole romance, as the relationships between Adam and Lily and Tess and Nate were quite clearly not the focus of the story and weren't given enough room to really expand into three dimensions, either. And despite the fact that Willa and Ben's relationship is the backbone of the romantic aspects in the book, the conclusion of that relationship arc felt a little less satisfying than those of Lily and Tess and their loves. That's personal preference and opinion, of course.

Despite those few issues, Montana Sky is a compelling, sweeping saga - still a compelling and sweeping saga, actually, and is rich and decadent with the benefits of Roberts' lyricism of prose and her unparalleled ability to draw a reader into the scenes of the book so completely that you can smell the snow on the mountain peaks after a blizzard and feel the trickle of sweat down your spine when the characters are stringing the fences. I loved revisiting this book after so many years and so many fond Roberts' memories.

A caution to sensitive readers there are scenes that dip into the deranged psychosis of a killer's mind and detail the savagery of his crimes - not to gruesome levels (though that's subjective), but definitely far more than just glossing over them. This is not simply a contemporary romance and does have brutally dark edges more commonly found in romantic suspense or thrillers. It may be too graphic in some places for some readers.

Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.
Early in the 18th century a dime novel was published. The first of 10 cent books "worth a dollar." It was full of negative human traits that continues in American today. I thought "Forever Amber" was racy but "Montana Sky" was just pornographic. However, I read every word... and found descriptions of Montana sky country well written. But, methinks the rest of Ms. Roberts novels I will avoid in the future.
Some of Nora Roberts' books are kind of predictable and you just know that her heart wasn't fully into writing the book. This one is different! It's like a trilogy packed into one book and she does it beautifully!

I fell in love with several characters and was sad when I read the last page because the book was over. It's like seeing a movie that's too good to take a bathroom break during it no matter how bad you gotta go!

My only complaint is that she got her bad guys a little mixed up. She wrote a murder scene in which she NAMED the bad guy then at the final climatic scene the other bad guy talks about doing the murder. There's another nasty scene in which the one bad guy was written as he was gleeful that his "victim" came across the scene but the other bad guy took credit for it as well.

So, TWO bad guys! Write down in a note to yourself when one bad guy is specifically named as doing the bad deed and see if YOU find that the bad guy changes at the end of the book. I would like to hear from you if you spot the boo boo's!

An excellent read for the money. Absolutely one of this author's best. My FAVORITE are the stories included in THE INVITATION.

Happy Reading!
It's Nora Roberts so you always know her work is a bit formulaic and not the most original. Still, this is one of her better books. Definitely worth a read if you like romance mixed with mystery. Some people seem to be put off by the murder mystery part of the book, but I never thought it was especially graphic. Still, if the idea of reading about a murder mystery is off putting this might not be for you since the mystery is just as much a part of this book as the romance.
I enjoyed the beginning premise of this to a certain point. But what bothered me is the book is an absolute "gore fest"! And believe me, I'm not a weenie who insists on hearts and flowers! Even for Nora Roberts I considered this brutal....and descriptively unnecessary. So be forewarned....we're dealing with mutilation of humans and animals. And the book is interminably long, so yes, it drags in some parts.
That said, the ending kept you guessing.
