Yankee in Atlanta Heroines Behind the Lines Jocelyn Green 9780802405784 Books

By The Book chose Yankee in Atlanta by Jocelyn Green as our June selection. A well-researched historical, this novel surprised all the Southern gals in my group. Many of us are Georgia natives, yet we didn’t know some of the history surrounding Sherman’s march to capture Atlanta. Since I am originally from Florida, I really was at a disadvantage before reading this book. FYI, you really can’t base your Civil War knowledge on Gone with The Wind! LOL! Thanks to Green we now are much better educated, especially about the home fronts in both North and South. Great writing, characters, and plot made this one a highly recommended read.

After disguising herself as a man, 23-year old Caitlyn McKae finds herself on the wrong side of the battle lines when she awakens in a Confederate hospital in Atlanta. A northerner, Caitlyn must learn to survive as she awaits either a chance to escape to the North or the arrival of northern troops. She finds refuge in the home of immigrant lawyer, Noah Becker. But war pulls all in the home into its inexorable grip.

There are a lot of things to like about Yankee in Atlanta. The characters are well-developed and easy to relate to. Their struggles, both physical and spiritual, touched my heart. There are two parallel storylines in the book that connect the characters, some who live in Atlanta and others that live in New York City. Historical details of the time period, including the living conditions of both cities during the Civil War give the novel authenticity. I also found myself doing my own bit of research. I love when a book makes me dig deeper into its subject matter. The revival that broke out among the troops from the North and South is explored too. It was heartening to see how God used the worst of times to reach men (and women) for Him. God’s will versus our own is just one spiritual theme. One character, Vivian, expressed that concept so well as she advised “Hope! Always hope, but in God alone. Wait, yes, but on the Lord. Expect Him to do great things and trust His timing rather than demanding that He follows yours.” Those are words I should certainly incorporate daily.

Yankee in Atlanta provided a great deal of discussion — the effects of war on soldiers and civilians, the role of women during the period, the lessons that can be learned even today. If you are looking for a book for your discussion group, this one is a great pick. Part of the 4-volume Heroines Behind The Lines series, it shares some characters with the other books, but is easily read as a standalone.

Highly Recommended.

Great for Book Clubs.

Yankee in Atlanta Heroines Behind the Lines Jocelyn Green 9780802405784 Books Reviews

I've enjoyed Jocelyn Green's writing for years through her non-fiction books like Faith Deployed. When she decided to enter the fiction market, I was anxious to see how she would do, and I delightfully enjoyed the first two books in this series Wedded to War and Widow of Gettysburg.

In Yankee in Atlanta, I say that she's continued to learn and grow as an author and I cannot wait to dive into the final book in this series Spy in Richmond. The characters were painfully real. Sometimes I wanted to slap one or two of them, sometimes I wanted to wrap them in my arms and offer comfort, and once or twice I could have angrily rushed to a character's defense!

Before reading this book, I truthfully knew little about the siege on Atlanta during the American Civil War. I knew the city was a focal point, knew it got hit hard, and deduced that this caused untold hardship. However, Mrs. Green brought those realities to life, and I hurt for the people who lived through those days. I can't imagine walking the paths they walked--yankee or confederate--and this novel has given me a fresh appreciation for those who lived through those days and rebuilt the United States afterwards.

Like the other books in this series, it is not an easy read even though it is excellent fiction. I highly recommend it.
Jocelyn Green yet again has outdone herself, weaving a riveting tale of a young girl whose desperate past is a catalyst for enlisting in the Union Army. She is wounded in enemy territory, and awakens in Rebel country; Atlanta, Georgia. If the origins of her military service is discovered, she will be executed. She is presented with the opportunity to care for a Confederate soldier’s daughter after he is compelled into service. Caitlin must endure the carnage of war, battling issues of identity and guilt, and somehow survive hunger, disease, violence, and prejudices- and all this before the shelling by Sherman.
Caitlin manages to keep herself and the child she has been entrusted with alive, and a gentle story of love blooms despite the ravages of war. The battle is not just for the stronghold of Atlanta. Caitlin must wade through secrets and brokenness to find restoration in her own heart and mind.

In the North, Ruby’s story continues (a character we met in Wedded To War). Rescued from the dregs of society, Ruby has worked hard to make a new life for herself and her son- yet her past comes back to haunt her in more ways than one. Will she ever know love and undaunted grace?
A rich historical context is woven into a beautiful tale of redemption and restoration. Presenting compelling story lines, Jocelyn helps us to understand the challenges and heartache of a nation torn apart, as well as the families caught in the cross-fire. It is clear that Jocelyn spends a great deal of time researching, for the difficult details of war are both real and heart wrenching. Still, courage rises from behind the lines as desolation gives way to hope, healing, and new beginnings.
